Using Protective Signs for Home Security

When it comes to home security, many people don’t realize the simple, cheap steps they can take to help deter intruders. Protective signs can make a criminal think twice before entering your property, let alone your home or vehicle. These signs don’t necessarily have to come from a Home Monitoring Service such as Brinks or ADT. They can be found in any local home store like Home Depot or Lowes and serve the same purpose. They offer a wide variety of decals with similar designs and colors to help with your home security needs.

Signs In and Around Your Yard

It’s a great idea to protect your home thoroughly by setting up a home monitoring system, but unfortunately some people just can’t afford the extra monthly cost. The next best thing to do is to confuse the criminal and make them think a loud siren will go off if they try to enter your home. Sticking signs into your yard, hanging them on gates along the perimeter of your home and placing stickers on your windows are all great ideas, whether or not your home is actually protected.

Another great idea is placing “Beware of Dog” signs around the perimeter of your home, even if you own a cat. There’s a fear about being attacked by a huge dog as punishment for entering your home that sits in an intruders mind once they gain knowledge of what could possibly be inside.

Signs On Your Windows

Decal stickers aren’t just for little kids. Its better to have decal stickers on your windows that have a logo from ADT or Brinks since those stickers announce your home IS protected, but its important to remember that most criminals aren’t going to take the time to read these stickers in detail, in the dark and especially while trying to find an entrance into your home. Local home stores sell similar stickers for your windows for just a couple dollars.

Another thing to remember is, it’s okay to go overboard. Place your decals on every available window if you want. If you're buying the inexpensive ones from your local home store, buy a bunch. Place them appropriately though. Remember that not all crimes happen at night, and during the day it’s easier to read the decals, giving the intruder knowledge of the fake versus the real deal. Also, take other necessary steps like lighting and lawn care to prevent “hiding” places for your intruders. Keep your doors and windows locked and curtains drawn to avoid showing off your valuables.
