Security Bars Security bars aren’t just found on windows anymore. Many consumers have realized they add security to your doors too. Whether it’s your solid oak front door or streak-free patio door, security bars have expanded their use. There are two types of security bars for your doors and patio doors. When using standard doors you should look for a locking device that can withstand up to 1,000 lbs, and when using a patio door you goal is to prevent thieves from being able to lift your door off its track. For decades, people have questioned the use of window security bars. There have been many tragic incidents that have left many families distraught. Even though they are a definite deterrent for criminals, there are many safety issues recent technology is trying to clear up. Window security bars that were installed in the past were permanently put in place. Used mainly in low-income neighborhoods where people are already at risk for crime, security bars not only keep people from coming in, they keep trapped victims from getting out. Unfortunately fire fighters, rescue personal and victims have lost their lives in fires simply because old fashioned security bars were installed on their windows. In recent times however, there is a new product out that offers the same great protection at access points. Security Bar Release’s have not become a requirement yet, but as time goes on I’m sure they will. The quick release device allows the bars to be opened immediately in an emergency. Authorities urged folks with older models to have their bars replaced and/or retrofitted with the release device. The device is operated from the inside without compromising security, and once it is opened, it’s possible to put the device back into place for the next use. You don’t need keys, detailed knowledge or great physical efforts to use this system. Even children can open the release device and escape out a window. Security bars are manufactured in three main sizes: 12mm, 16mm and 20mm diameters round or square steel uprights are welded to the thickness of the frame. Made of either flat steel or angle iron, security bars are still a popular method for home security. All window bars over 900mm in height must have a horizontal strengthening bar as a standard. Adjustable bars are new to the market. They are aluminum rods with no-mar rubber ends that adjust to the length of the window by simply clicking it to the right length. You may even make these bars shorter to enjoy fresh air without losing your security. Steel brackets and mounting hardware usually come with this product and it should only cost the consumer around $30.00. Grilles are also a nice alternative to permanent bars. Effective against crime, the maximum strength with strong rolled steel uprights and multi point locking system not only provides security to your windows, but a sense of class. Many grilles offer a clear visibility and ventilation is not an issue when they are closed. You can choose from sliding or collapsible grilles that have unique styles and colors. |
