Rim Locks

Rim locks, or rim latches as I've learned to call them, are definitely more effective than a simple latch lock. In fact, since they're usually used with other internal locks they're also known as auxiliary locks. Once I got that figured out, let me tell you, it was much easier to find out about them.

So basically it’s a deadbolt system that is fixed on a drawplate that’s slide able in a rim lock case.

See, there's two parts to a rim lock or rim latch. First you’ve got the lock body. This is the piece that attaches to your door. The second part is called a strike. This is the little bit of the door frame that the latch clicks into when the door is shut. Installing is simple. You would do the basic method of installing any deadbolt. Just line up the body and strike, drill holes and check to see if it works. Making adjustments could be minimal, so chisel out any unnecessary wood in the doorframe and be sure your measurements are correct before sounding the zing of the drill.

Spring loaded rim locks are the most popular ones. They allow you to open your door by turning and holding the latch from the inside. Its similar to just using a doorknob, but who needs those when you’ve got so many options. I'm kidding, and they can also be opened from the outside with a key. A deadbolt type rim lock automatically locks when your door is shut, yet the deadbolt rim latch doesn’t. You have to use a key to lock it, while the other one doesn’t require anything but shutting the door. Confused? Don’t be, just know that some of these things come with an emergency release and really cool different interior and exterior designs. You can find them in cast iron, solid brass, a duo of those, or steel. Plus you have options like with or without knobs.

Some rim locks, or rim latches, or auxiliary locks or, just kidding, but anyways any of these locks can be installed where I mentioned earlier or they can be installed on the outside of your door. Many people don’t recommend doing that, since thieves have gotten smarter and learned they can simply pick the lock and gain entrance. But like I said earlier too, if you take other steps in securing yourself and your property you should be able to sleep better at night.
