IP Cameras

Internet Protocol/Ethernet cameras are the sure way to go among surveillance of any kind. IP cameras were designed for LAN but are quickly moving in the direction of MAN, etc. In fact, 90% of devices in these networks are IP enabled and each camera can be located by an IP address. They are more cost efficient and future proof solutions that connect the technical gap between analog and digital worlds are beginning to come together. Some of the IP cameras use M-JEG compressions, some use MPEG-4 compressions, and some cameras are equipped to use both. Indoor IP cameras tend to be more popular than outdoor cameras simply because outdoor cameras are limited in their range. You may decide between either fixed or wireless cameras and most of them start around $500.00 and go upwards in price. In fact, to complete the IP surveillance system you should look into storage, enclosures, software and lenses like CS mount, fish eye, wide-angled and telephoto lenses.

So, there is a reason for the expensive nature of these products and accessories. First, video servers via IP networks have the ability to access real-time video and live video can be viewed by an authorized person at any defined workstation over the internet. Additionally video servers can control equipment such as a Pan/Tilt/Zoom cameras using built in ports. Once in control the network camera immediately digitizes the images and the video stream is ready to be sent to any computer network available in the area. This creates an unbelievable sense of security. You may even hook up multiple cameras and monitors and display them in your own customized way.

So most people just want to know what the difference is between IP cameras and Web cameras, since most people consider them one in the same. That’s not true though, in fact that are very clear and distinct differences between the two. IP is a true networking device containing an embedded OS (Operating System). They support multiple users and can be viewed by any web browser while no added hardware is necessary. Web cameras must be connected to an internet host computer and that host can only support one user. You can not share information on a network, in fact only the host computer can access the web cam. In today’s world, the web camera simply doesn’t match the standards and needs required to ensure your safety, it’s more convenient for keeping in touch with loved ones rather than surveillance.

IP Focus Magazine launched its first issue in July of 2007. This premier publication has given consumers access to the latest new products, technologies and industry advancements creating catalogs that not only offer products, but insight and details to the world of surveillance. So if the IP camera is the way to go for you, pick up the newest monthly issue and see what’s out there.
