Motion Sensors

Motion Sensors are defined as a device that contains a physical mechanism or an electronic sensor that quantifies motion and that can be either integrated with or connected to other devices that alert a user of the presence of a moving object within its field of view. There are three major types of motion sensors. PIR (passive infrared sensors), Ultrasonic (active), and Microwave (active). Most motion detectors can be hooked up to burglar alarms creating a combination of different technologies. PIR sensors look for body heat and no energy is emitted from the sensor. Ultrasonic sensors send out pulses and measure the reflection of moving objects. Microwave sensors send out microwave pulses and measure the reflection off a moving object similar to what a police radar gun would do.

There are many more types of motion sensors designed to keep your personal space and items safe from crime. Dual tech motion detectors benefit with each type of sensor and false alarms have been reported as reduced. All companies have the option to use PIR/Microwave motion detectors that have a “Pet Immune” function which allows the detector to ignore pets up to 40 lbs while using wireless models and up to 80 lbs for all hand-wired models. Occupancy Sensors are integrated with timing devices. When motions have stopped for a specific length of time, this sensor triggers a light extinguishing signal that prevents illumination of unoccupied spaces, like public toilets.

Sudden Motion Sensors or SMS is Apple’s patent-pending motion based hardware and data protection system designed to keep your laptop safe from accidental drops and things like that. That’s right, motion detectors are no longer strictly limited to use of unoccupied space. The triaxel accelerometer detects sudden acceleration, so when it’s dropped it automatically knows to prepare the hardware for impact. The system disengages the dist drive heads from the hard disk platters preventing data loss and drive damage. Once your computer goes into its stable mode it begins to function normally. There are two types of SMS programs. Sensors are used in G4 based laptops and resolve about 52 counts per gravity and sensors used in current Intel based laptops resolve about 250 counts per gravity.

Security companies like Brinks and ADT have packages which include motion detector kits. Like I said earlier you can include motion sensors as apart of a bigger protection plan. Motion lights for outer perimeters such as near doorways or vehicles can be found just about anywhere these days. You can set the lights to work only when there’s a disturbance in the field of view or there are functions on certain models that allow you to predetermine and schedule periods of time thru the night for the light to come on and shut off. Motion Sensors are great devices to help prevent crime. Just when the criminal thinks he’s in the clear, BAM! He’s center stage!!
